“The climate crisis is one of our time’s biggest challenges, and we want to contribute to the solution. Based on our subsurface expertise, we will spend the next few years exploring whether we can establish a safe permanent CO₂ storage facility on Lolland.
And we need the best people on the team.”

Ken Wesnæs, CEO, CarbonCuts

Our mission

At CarbonCuts, we are working towards a sustainable future with solutions that alleviate the climate crisis. Our first project, the Ruby Project, explores the possibility of safe and cost-effective CO₂ storage in the Rødby structure, a unique geological formation on Lolland. Ruby could become one of the world’s first onshore CO₂ storage facilities and a milestone in the green transition should the subsurface prove suitable.

The story behind

CarbonCuts was founded in 2022 by Ken Wesnæs with a clear mission: to investigate whether the Rødby structure on Lolland could become one of Denmark’s first land-based CO₂ storage facilities. The Danish state geologists from GEUS had already identified the area as particularly suitable for CO₂ storage. The area is thus an essential part of Denmark’s national climate strategy.

The CarbonCuts team grew – and after two years of preparing an ambitious work program, in early 2024 we applied for a license from the authorities to explore the potential of the Ruby structure.

In June 2024, the Danish energy authorities granted CarbonCuts an exploration license for Project Ruby, in which Nordsøfonden participates as a state partner. This marked the start of a new chapter for CarbonCuts and our parent company, BlueNord. Being a BlueNord subsidiary, we benefit from a strong capital base and solid insight into the Danish offshore industry and the DUC (Danish Underground Consortium).

The CarbonCuts team is made up of experienced specialists, with deep knowledge of geology, technology and complex projects, especially in the energy and offshore sectors. We combine expertise with an innovative approach and accountability to develop and deliver solutions that meet the highest standards and develop new ones within CO2 storage.

The Ruby Project goes beyond a technical task; it’s a mission to contribute to a sustainable future and play a key role in the fight against climate change. This is what drives us every day.

Meet the team

The CarbonCuts team is committed to developing and delivering safe and responsible solutions within CO2 management and storage.

The Ruby Project

Project Ruby: CarbonCuts’ ambitious CO2 storage project at Rødby

Project Ruby explores the possibility of establishing a safe and permanent CO2 storage facility deep under the soil of South Lolland in the so-called Rødby Structure. The area has been designated by the state for its geological suitability. With the project’s exploration licence, we will spend the next 2-3 years uncovering the potential for realising Ruby together with Nordsøfonden, which is the state’s partner in the project.

A key effort for the climate

We are on a mission to mitigate climate change by storing industrially captured CO2 deep underground. The captured CO2 may originate from Danish and foreign emitters. The method, known as CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage), is a proven technology and a key component of Denmark’s national climate action programme. If our studies show that the project can be realised, our ambition is to store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually from 2030.

Visit CarbonCut’s Ruby Project website if you want to stay updated on the project.

Dialogue and engagement

We believe Project Ruby has the potential to make a difference – for Lolland, Denmark’s climate action and our planet by storing CO₂ permanently underground near Rødby.

CarbonCuts works responsibly and transparently by sharing knowledge, seeking dialogue and informing about the project’s development.

We take our responsibility towards the local community and the environment seriously. And we work actively with community involvement. That’s why we have created a website for the Ruby Project with detailed information about the project’s purpose, phases and schedule.

We prioritise dialogue with local communities and strive to make it easy to ask questions and get answers to any concerns and to seek knowledge about CCS and the Ruby Project.

Partnerships and Investors

CarbonCuts is a wholly owned subsidiary of BlueNord, which owns 36.8% of DUC (Dansk Undergrunds Consortium). BlueNord’s expertise in the energy sector and solid capital base strengthens our position as a leading player in CCS development and carbon management and storage.

Nordsøfonden is the state’s subsoil company and partner in Project Ruby, and is managing the state’s interest in the project with 20% ownership.

CarbonCuts also collaborates with a number of other experts and key partners in the CCS sector who help realise our mission in delivering the CO₂ solutions of the future.
