Expected CCS announcement published: CarbonCuts is ready to go

Copenhagen, August 21, 2023: The Danish government and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities have just published the anticipated CCS proposal, which contains a Christmas present for the climate; namely a tender for CO2 storage licenses onshore and coastal in December 2023. Onshore CO2 storage is crucial because CCS will help Denmark and other countries reduce CO2 emissions from the heaviest industry quickly and efficiently, so that together we can meet the climate goals and fight the climate crisis.

CarbonCut’s ambition is to establish a permanent CO2 storage facility in Lolland Municipality at the Rødby structure, which has been designated by the Danish government (GEUS) as one of the best places in Denmark to store CO2 underground because the geological conditions are ideal. Our ambition has been named ‘Project Ruby’.

We are therefore ready to start bidding for the Rødby license as soon as the final details of the license application are in place. In reality, we have already been working for a long time on the initial preparations for the license application. An important part of the process has been the close dialog we have had with authorities, politicians, other stakeholders, landowners and citizens in Rødby over the past year.

In addition to the important dialog with the surrounding community, we are working on the more technical and financial aspects of the project, which could become one of Denmark’s first onshore CO2 storage facilities. As part of the planning, we are looking at the design of construction facilities, geological work and analysis, investigation and calculation of different technological scenarios in relation to how the CO2 infrastructure is best designed and optimized, both in terms of sustainability and economy.

A large part of our preliminary work involves understanding the subsurface and mapping the geological structure in detail.

The Ministry’s CCS proposal sets out how Denmark can become a leading CCS nation at both national and international level and meet the climate goals.
